How to Sew the Perfect Hat - The Mad Cap Weatherblocker for rain, sun and fun

Follow the step by step tutorials for our Perfect Hat on our YouTube Channel - Mad Cap Hats.  This is an original  design created by Tori Capes, Certified Milliner for Mad Cap Hats, all rights reserved. You can use the hats you create from our patterns for your personal or business use.
The first video shows you how to work with water resistant fabric to create a lovely rain hat.  New outdoor fabrics are also great for sun resistance too. I wore mine all last summer ... it was my go to hat of choice.  More videos are coming about how to use this pattern with cotton fabrics like denim and canvas as well as how to trim it for a dressy occasion too.  In the fall you can use corduroy and in winter fleece.  Hang on, you are going to love this hat!
This is an experienced Beginner to Intermediate level sewing project that will inspire you to make more and gives instant confidence because the finished result is so lovely!  Make sure that your sewing equipment can handle the layers of fabric.  This pattern was designed to use medium weight fabrics for your main body fabric but you can add color and texture by mixing textures and fibers.   Only the brim edge is designed to be cut on the bias.  The other pieces can be cut on the grain, bias or against the grain edge.  A great pattern for using up small pieces.   The elastic inside the back of the lining piece just adds to the comfortable and generous fit.

Note - Links from this page will open in new windows leaving this main info/index page open for you. The links to the actual pattern files are below the printer instructions below.  This is intentional so that you read these instructions and configure your printer settings correctly so that your pattern pieces will print to be the same size as ours! How to Download the Pattern - Setting up your Printer

1.  Make sure you have a PDF reader on your device as the files will automatically open in your default PDF program. If you do not have a PDF program you will need to install one.    "Adobe Reader"  is a FREE program and it can be downloaded here .
2.  Print the files on Letter or A4 ... set your printer to print ACTUAL or CUSTOM 100% size in your printer dialogue box like the photo below.  Do NOT have Fit or shrink or fit to page selected.  Only Actual Size or Custom Scale (size) 100% for page size.  Also check page margins in the Page Setup or Advanced tabs for your printer.  Page margins should be set to 0.00 mm
Assembling THE PATTERN PIECES -  This pattern is assembled in three rows of four pages.  Trim away the extra paper to the outside edges of the large black boxes surrounding each pattern piece segment on each page.  Tape together the black boxes by matching the pattern lines running to the edges and the half circles on the sides of the boxes for pages 1-4, 5-8 and 9 through 12.  Assemble the rows together by matching the half Vs to each other to create diamonds between the rows, matching the pattern lines as well.  Your taped pattern sheet should look like the photo below.  In the video I use a glue stick and poster board to make a hard copy of the pattern that I can trace around rather than pinning and cutting through paper each time I want to make this hat.  I recommend that if you think you will make multiple hats from this pattern.  If you are purchasing the multi size pattern, the pictures for each pattern set will be in the Read this first file/Instruction booklet.  Photo below is of the FREE Pattern sponsored by Craftsy.

NOTES about the PATTERN -  A seam allowance of 3/8" or 1 cm is built into the black outline of each pattern piece.  Each piece has an shadow outline.  This shadow will allow you to use a larger seam allowance of 1/2" or 1.25 cm.  You can make the pattern pieces deeper or a bit larger in fit but cutting to the shadow edge and maintaining a 3/8" or 1 cm seam allowance.  Tip - Sometimes easing the band and brim pieces together can be accomplished better if you reverse the stacking order that I demonstrate in my how to video when you are sewing those two pieces  together.

How to adjust the pattern for different head sizes -  If you need help converting a specific head size please feel free to message me at madcaphats@gmail.com and I will try to help with that calculation.  Please consider buying the full pattern package if you can because that really is the best way to support this effort to teach you how to make great hats for personal and/or business use and keep the patterns and videos coming.
