The Reversible Winter Headband Tutorial and Pattern

Thank you for watching our Winter Headband Video on YouTube!! This Headband can be made with knit fabrics like Polar Fleece and trimmed at the top with thinner fabrics like micro fleece or steamed velour.   The feature of this headband is the shape that offers full ear coverage without extra bulk  across the forehead.  The top trim brings the fit close to the head and keeps the headband in place like a hat.  Finishing the top this way means we can use two different fabrics/prints/solids in the construction of the body of the headband and the headband is Reversible! Two headbands in one!

Note - Links from this page will open in new windows leaving this main info/index page open for you.

The headband body is best suited for fabric that is medium weight stretch fabrics like polar fleece that offer warmth and comfort next to the skin.    Follow the links below to download a FREE PDF for the pattern in Average Women's (Size M) and Average Men's (Size L).  You are welcome to download both and no personal data will be collected.

Follow the video for step by step instructions.  The video is found on YouTube here - https://youtu.be/Q2BOx8gTBhc

NOTES ON MODIFYING THE PATTERN PIECES -  You can make the band deeper or a bit larger in fit but cutting to the shadow edge and maintaining a 3/8" or 1 cm seam allowance.  The same can be true for the top edge trim - cut to the outside of the shadow area and use a smaller seam allowance if this piece needs to be a bit longer to work with your machine.  Sometimes easing the two pieces together can be accomplished better if you reverse the stacking order when you are sewing them together.  I mean that rather than sew the edge onto the band with the edge piece under your sewing machine presser  foot, try putting the edge underneath, on top of the feed dog plate and see if that works better for you.

How to adjust the pattern for different head sizes -  If you know the headband size you want to create is different than the two patterns we have provided, you can use your printer to help draft your custom size pattern.  For example, if the head size is smaller, use the Medium pattern and set your printer to print the output at a Custom Size that is less than 100%.  So for a head size of 21.5 inches or 54.5 cm, print the medium pattern at a Custom Size of 95.6 percent or 96 percent for slightly larger, 95 percent for slightly smaller.  For heads larger than 23.5 inches or 60 cm, use the large pattern as your starting point and again, calculate the percentage difference between 23.5 inches or 60 cm and the head size you are trying to make. Set your printer to print at that larger than 100 percent percentage rate.  If you need help converting a specific head size please feel free to message me at madcaphats@gmail.com and I will try to help with that calculation.

Thank you so much for watching our video and hopefully subscribing to our YouTube Channel.  Subscribing is free and we are here to help you make, create and love hats! Until the next one Mad Cappers!! Cheers, Tori

How to Download the Pattern - Setting up your Printer

1.  Make sure you have a PDF reader on your device as the files will automatically open in your default PDF program. If you do not have a PDF program you will need to install one.    "Adobe Reader"  is a FREE program and it can be downloaded here .
2.  Print the files on Letter or A4 ... set your printer to print ACTUAL or CUSTOM 100% size in your printer dialogue box like the photo below.  Do NOT have Fit or shrink or fit to page selected.  Only Actual Size or Custom Scale (size) 100% for page size.  Also check page margins in the Page Setup or Advanced tabs for your printer.  Page margins should be set to 0.00 mm
3. Each pattern set is 5 pages.  The pattern pieces have two cutting guides for seam allowance.  A seam allowance of 3/8" or 1 cm is built into the pattern pieces if the pieces are cut to the black outline on the inside of the blue or green shadow around each piece.  Cutting to the outside edge of the shadow will increase the seam allowance to 1/2" or 1.25 cm.

4. Check the guide lines on page 1 for printer calibration. It is critical that the printed output measures exactly 5 inches or 10 cm.  IF it does not, check your printer settings in step 2.

Download the Files (Click on the Sizes or pattern pictures below)

SIZE MEDIUM - AVERAGE WOMEN'S FIT (22.5"/57.5 CM)

SIZE LARGE - AVERAGE MEN'S FIT (23.5"/60 CM)

Once your pages are assembled, cutting away the extra paper from the black boxes containing the pattern pieces and joining the half circles together at each side, the pattern should look like the photos below.  The picture with the blue shadow outline is Size M and the picture with the green shadow outline is the Size L.
