Classic Poorboy Cap, Featuring 12 Head Sizes, unisex sewing pattern and instructions, digital PDF format

The  classic 8-panel cap that has been part of mankind's hat wardrobe for over 400 years! The poorboy has it's roots in the British working class but nowadays all classes wear and love this style of cap.  Our modern design of this classic has been created by Tori Capes, Certified Milliner.  Designed using readily available materials and supported by a step by step by step video on YouTube.  You can watch the video before buying the pattern here on our YouTube Channel - https://youtu.be/1EqxwignEnU

This pattern can be beginner level but requires some previous knowledge of sewing pieces together.  It is very suitable and easy to follow for anyone at the intermediate skill level.

This pattern contains the template for three top variations! One, Style "A" is just slightly baggy.  Style "B" is the one we make in the video and has a relaxed fit baggy look that is very flattering for most people.  Style "C" is extra baggy and can be pulled down to cover your ears in cold weather.  The Style "C" top and lining and band makes a lovely beret without the visor part of the pattern.

Each top style has it's own lining template as well.  The design has a small insert of elastic at the back for comfort and fit.  Elastic recommended is .75" wide or 2 cm wide and lengths for each size are suggested in the instruction booklet.  The booklet refers back to the video with timestamps to help you see the steps rather than rely on our use of English to guide you.

WE recommend that you watch the video before shopping for your fabric or cutting your fabric for tips and supply recommendations. There is also a free version of this pattern available on our website but accessed through a link from the Description of the video on YouTube.

THIS pattern includes TWELVE (12) Child to Adult head sizes.  The sizes are grouped in sets of Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large.  Each Set contains 3 sizes and requires 20-24  pages to print.  Pieces are spaced out well within those 20 pages so there is minimal confusion with lines crossing over between the three sizes on each set.  Sizes are in half inch increments and there is also instructions about measuring head size/circumference.  Each pattern piece is marked with the size for easy reference after the pieces are cut.

Small Set contains the pieces for head sizes 20.5" (52 cm), 21" (53.5 cm), and 21.5" (55 cm).  The small set is good for fitting kids ages toddler to preteen and small adults.  The Medium Set contains the pattern pieces for head sizes 22" (56 cm), 22.5" (57 cm) and 23" (58.5 cm). The Large Set contains the pieces for head sizes 23.5" (60 cm), 24" (61 cm) and 24.5" (62.5 cm).  The Extra Large Set contains the pieces for head sizes 25" (63.5 cm), 25.5" (65 cm) and 26" (66 cm).

The instructional video on YouTube demonstrates how to make the average women's head size which is 22.5 inches or 57.5 cm.  The same process of construction will apply to all the head sizes in this package.

We recommend you read the "READ This First" file which is at the beginning of the 20 page step by step written instruction booklet before printing any of the pattern pieces.  Save the booklet to your device.  You can refer back to it while sewing.  Likely the video will be the best step by step guide and we really recommend watching the video before starting the pattern.

The most common mistake with digital patterns is not setting up your printer to the correct settings.  It is important to change the page setting for printing to "Actual" or Custom and then choose 100% to print the correct sized pieces.  Also make sure your page margins are set too zero.  There is a 5 inch and a 10cm long line on the first page of each pattern set so print that page first and measure to make sure that the settings are correct.

Pattern sets are color coded for each size so you can refer back to your device if you are not sure but this pattern is pretty easy to follow in color or black and white.  Each pattern piece in each size are clearly marked making it easy to keep the pieces in different sizes stored together.

Pieces have a small shadow in their respective size color that will add 1/8 inch to the seam allowance if you need 1/2 inch for seam allowance or add a bit to the size.

Seam allowance of 3/8 inch or 1 cm is built into the solid outline of each piece.
