Kid's Fleece Hood and Neckwarmer Tutorial and Pattern

Thank you for watching our Kid's Fleece Hood and Neckwarmer Video on YouTube!!  The  Hood with Neckwarmer is a kid favorite! It offers handsfree comfort and warmth for busy little ones outside in cooler climates. It is fast and easy to put on so daycare and schools love this hat too.  No ties, it just slips over the head.  The cuff trim around the face adds extra protection from wind and wet weather.  Kid's just love this hat.  Always!  The pattern piece can be positioned so the seam is at the top, cutting the body on a fold down the center back.  You can cut instead using the top on the fold or you can cut two pieces for the body and have them joined at the top and back if you are using up some small pieces of leftover fabric.  You can decorate the top with a pom pom or with dino spikes or with curls or you can leave the top as is.  Lots of options with this classic favorite from our 40 years in business.  This particular design has been slightly updated but the basic pattern has been in our line for about 30 years!  Beloved and Tested on 1000s of little heads!

This is a beginner level sewing project that will inspire you to make more and gives instant confidence because the finished result is so lovely! There is more information on the pattern download page. The pattern has been designed to be made with a good quality medium weight polar fleece with a two way stretch. Make sure it is pill resistant on at least one side.

Note - Links from this page will open in new windows leaving this main info/index page open for you. The links to the actual pattern files, one link for each head size, are below the printer instructions below.

The hood-neckwarmer has been designed for polar fleece fabrics in medium to heavy weight with a 2-way stretch.  The basic hood has 2 pattern pieces.  There are three head sizes below.  Small fits children 6 months to 2 years generally.  Medium fits toddlers 2 to 4 years and Large fits school age kids 4 - 10 years.  These are estimates as kids will have larger or smaller than average size heads.

The stretchy direction of the fleece will go around the head so make sure you position your pattern piece with the arrows on the stretch going from the grain edge to the other grain edge or side to side.  The cuff/face trim has a stretch arrow too and is also cut from side to side.  Optional trim for the top can be cut in any direction. Follow the video for step by step instructions.  The video is found on YouTube here - https://youtu.be/ojt9L2jlyq8

NOTES ON MODIFYING THE PATTERN PIECES -  A seam allowance of 3/8" or 1 cm is built into the black outline of each pattern piece.  Each piece has an shadow outline in a color matching the size chart below.  This shadow will allow you to use a larger seam allowance of 1/2" or 1.25 cm.  You can make the pattern pieces deeper or a bit larger in fit but cutting to the shadow edge and maintaining a 3/8" or 1 cm seam allowance.  Tip - Sometimes easing the two pieces together can be accomplished better if you reverse the stacking order that I demonstrate in my how to video when you are sewing the two pieces  together.

How to adjust the pattern for different head sizes -  If you need help converting a specific head size please feel free to message me at madcaphats@gmail.com and I will try to help with that calculation.

How to Download the Pattern - Setting up your Printer

1.  Make sure you have a PDF reader on your device as the files will automatically open in your default PDF program. If you do not have a PDF program you will need to install one.    "Adobe Reader"  is a FREE program and it can be downloaded here .
2.  Print the files on Letter or A4 ... set your printer to print ACTUAL or CUSTOM 100% size in your printer dialogue box like the photo below.  Do NOT have Fit or shrink or fit to page selected.  Only Actual Size or Custom Scale (size) 100% for page size.  Also check page margins in the Page Setup or Advanced tabs for your printer.  Page margins should be set to 0.00 mm
3. Each pattern set is 6 pages in two rows of three pages.  The pattern pieces have two cutting guides for seam allowance.  A seam allowance of 3/8" or 1 cm is built into the pattern pieces if the pieces are cut to the black outline on the inside of the blue or green shadow around each piece.  Cutting to the outside edge of the shadow will increase the seam allowance to 1/2" or 1.25 cm.

4. Check the guide lines on page 1 for printer calibration. It is critical that the printed output measures exactly 5 inches or 10 cm.  IF it does not, check your printer settings in step 2.

Download the Files (Click on the Sizes or pattern pictures below) Note - Each size is a separate file/download

SIZE SMALL - 6 months to 24 months (under 18.5 inch head size)

SIZE MEDIUM - 2 - 4 years (18.5 - 20 inch head)

SIZE LARGE - 4 - 10 years (20 - 21.5 inch head)

Once your pages are assembled, cutting away the extra paper from the black boxes containing the pattern pieces and joining the half circles together at each side, the pattern should look like the photos below.  The picture with the RED shadow outline is Size Small. The picture with the BLUE shadow outline is Size Medium and the picture with the GREEN shadow outline is the Size Large.
